Reconnecting Through Conversation: HBNC’s Social Connection Program

In a world where many people quietly experience loneliness, the power of simple human connection is proving to be one of the most effective ways to support mental health. At the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, the Social Connection program is doing exactly that—bringing people together, one conversation at a time.

Building on the success of its Social Prescription initiative, the program continues to support individuals who may feel disconnected from their community. Whether it’s due to life changes, mental health challenges, or simply being new to the region, the program provides a welcoming pathway back into social engagement.

Team Leader Lara Maidment brings a wealth of experience to the community. With more than 30 years as a nurse and a career supporting people facing homelessness, addiction, and complex life challenges, Lara understands just how important connection can be during difficult times.

“Sometimes the hardest step is the first one,” Lara explains. “But a simple conversation can change everything.”

Two key monthly events are at the heart of the Social Connection program, both held at the Urangan Community Wellness Centre.

Lunch and Learn, held on the second Thursday of each month from 11:30am to 1:00pm, offers more than just a meal. For $10, attendees enjoy a two-course lunch along with tea and coffee, while hearing from guest speakers on topics ranging from legal support to dementia awareness. It’s an opportunity to gain knowledge, build confidence, and connect with others in a relaxed and supportive environment.

For those seeking something more casual, Chat With Friends takes place on the third Wednesday of each month. For just $5, participants can enjoy a morning tea in a no-pressure setting—perfect for meeting new people, sharing stories, and finding out what’s happening locally.

These gatherings may seem simple, but their impact is significant. For many, especially those experiencing isolation or navigating challenging periods, they provide a vital sense of belonging. They are also a valuable gateway for newcomers to the Fraser Coast looking to build friendships and feel part of the community.

In a time when disconnection can often go unnoticed, the Social Connection program is a reminder that meaningful change can start with something as small—and as powerful—as a conversation.
