Supporting Women, Strengthening Lives: Inside the Wide Bay Women’s Health Centre

For more than three decades, the Wide Bay Women’s Health Centre has been a quiet but powerful support network for women across the Fraser Coast—offering a safe space to navigate life’s challenges with understanding, respect, and practical care.

Manager Lynette Denning and Women’s Community Engagement Worker Nat Keen describe the centre as a place where women are supported not just through difficult moments, but through personal growth and empowerment. Supporting women aged 12 and over, the centre works across a wide range of areas including anxiety, depression, self-esteem, grief and loss, relationship challenges, and domestic and family violence.

“Depression and anxiety are some of the most common challenges we see,” Lynette explains. “But every woman’s journey is different.”

A key message that shapes the centre’s approach is readiness. “You have to be ready for counselling,” Lynette says—highlighting the importance of meeting women where they are, without pressure, and allowing them to take steps forward at their own pace.

The centre provides free, confidential counselling delivered by qualified professionals, offering a welcoming and safe environment where women can explore their concerns and build strategies for change. On-site resources, referrals, and culturally appropriate support—including services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and women from diverse backgrounds—ensure care is accessible and inclusive.

Beyond counselling, education and connection are key pillars of the centre’s work. A wide range of workshops provide practical tools to support emotional wellbeing through mindfulness and art therapy.  These sessions are designed not only to build skills, but to create a sense of community. “Holding women in a safe space during workshops, creates calm and meaningful connections”, said Nat.

“Workshops are a powerful way for women to realise they’re not alone,” Nat says. “They create connection as well as learning.”

The centre’s philosophy focuses on helping women increase control over their lives, build confidence, and strengthen their wellbeing—supporting both personal and social growth.

For many women across the Fraser Coast, the Wide Bay Women’s Health Centre is more than a service. It’s a place of understanding, a place of connection—and often, a place to begin again.
